What Is a Circular Reference
A circular reference is a formula that refers back to its own cell either
directly or through a chain of other formulas. Excel cannot calculate these
formulas properly because they create an infinite loop where the formula depends
on its own result.
How to Find Circular References in Excel
To find circular references in Excel, use the Error Checking
tool located in the Formulas tab, which automatically detects
and displays the cell addresses of any circular references in your workbook.
Methods to Locate Circular References
Using the Status Bar
The Status Bar displays circular reference warnings immediately when they
occur.
A message like “Circular References: [Cell Address]” appears
in the bottom-left corner of the Excel window when a workbook contains one or
more circular references.
Using Error Checking Tools
1. Navigate
to the Formulas tab on the ribbon
2. Click
the Error Checking dropdown arrow in the Formula Auditing
group
3. Hover
over Circular References
4. Excel
displays a list of all cells containing circular references
5. Click
any cell address in the list to jump directly to that cell
Device differences:
·
Windows: Error Checking is
located directly in the Formula Auditing group
·
Mac: Go to Tools >
Error Checking
Using Formula Auditing Tools
The Trace Precedents and Trace Dependents
tools help visualize circular reference paths:
1. Select
the suspected cell
2. Click
Trace Precedents
3. Blue
arrows show which cells feed into the selected formula
4. Click
Trace Dependents to see which cells rely on that cell
5. Circular
references show arrows looping back to the original cell
Removing Circular References
Direct Correction Method
1. Click
the problematic cell from the Circular References list
2. Review
the formula in the formula bar
3. Identify
which reference creates the loop
4. Edit
the formula to remove the self-reference
5. Press
Enter to confirm
Alternative Formula Solutions (Iterative Calculations)
Use iterative calculations only when recursion is required:
1. Go
to File > Options (Windows) or Excel >
Preferences (Mac)
2. Select
Formulas
3. Check
Enable iterative calculation
4. Set
Maximum Iterations to 100
5. Set
Maximum Change to 0.001
Common Circular Reference Scenarios
Running Totals
A running total becomes circular when a formula includes its own cell.
Example:
=SUM(A1:A10) placed in
cell A5 creates a loop because A5 is inside the range.
Percentage Calculations
Circular references arise when a value is calculated as a percentage of a
total that includes itself—e.g., commission included in total sales that it
depends on.
Nested VLOOKUP Loops
Two VLOOKUP formulas referencing each other create an unresolvable circular
loop.
Prevention Strategies
Planning Formula Structure
Structure spreadsheets logically:
·
Input cells
·
Calculation cells
·
Output cells
Keep these areas separate to prevent unintended circular references.
Using Named Ranges
Named ranges make formulas clearer and reduce mistakes.
Replace raw cell references with meaningful names.
Regular Auditing Practices
After adding or editing formulas:
·
Use Formula Auditing tools
·
Check the Circular References
menu
·
Inspect precedents and dependents
Troubleshooting Complex Circular References
Multiple Circular References
Excel shows only one circular reference at a time in the Status Bar.
Fix the first one, then recheck Error Checking to locate
additional issues.
Indirect Circular References
These occur through multi-step chains:
A1 → B1 → C1 → back to A1.
Use Trace Precedents on each cell to map the full loop.
Circular References Across Sheets
Cross-sheet circular loops require checking formulas in multiple worksheets.
Excel reports these with sheet names, e.g.:
Sheet2!B5
