To see if there are duplicates in Excel, you can use Conditional Formatting or formulas. Both methods highlight or identify repeated values in your dataset.
Method 1: Using Conditional Formatting
Select the column or range where you want to check for duplicates.
Go to the Home tab.
Click Conditional Formatting → Highlight Cells Rules → Duplicate Values.
In the pop-up, choose the formatting style (e.g., red fill or bold text).
Click OK.
All duplicate values in the selected range will be highlighted immediately. Unique values remain unformatted.
Method 2: Using a Formula
In a new column next to your data, enter the formula:
=COUNTIF(A:A, A1)>1
Replace
A:Awith your column range andA1with the first cell in the range.Press Enter and drag the formula down the column.
Cells returning
TRUEindicate duplicates. Cells returningFALSEare unique.
Method 3: Using the Remove Duplicates Tool to Check
Select the column or dataset.
Go to the Data tab.
Click Remove Duplicates.
A pop-up shows the number of duplicate and unique values before removing them.
This method is useful to see duplicates without actually deleting them.
Windows vs. Mac Differences
On Windows, the steps are exactly as described above.
On Mac, Conditional Formatting and Remove Duplicates exist under the Home and Data tabs, but the menu wording may slightly differ. For example, instead of "Highlight Cells Rules," it may appear as "Highlight Cells" with a sub-option for "Duplicate Values."
These methods allow fast detection and visualization of duplicates, making large datasets easier to manage.
