Typing the first letter in a drop-down list in Excel helps quickly navigate through a list of options without scrolling.
Select the cell that contains the drop-down list.
Start typing the first letter of the item you want to select.
Excel will automatically jump to the first item in the list that matches the letter typed.
Press Enter to select the highlighted option.
Additional Notes:
If multiple items in the list start with the same letter, keep typing the subsequent letters to refine your selection.
On Windows, this feature works by default for drop-down lists created through Data Validation.
On Mac, ensure the cell is active and you type slowly, as the behavior can sometimes be less responsive than on Windows.
Example:
For a drop-down list containing Apple, Banana, Cherry, Date:
Typing C will select Cherry.
Typing D will select Date.
This feature improves data entry speed, especially when the drop-down list contains many options.
