A pivot table in Excel can be moved to a different location within the same worksheet or to another worksheet. This allows better organization and flexibility in analyzing data.
Steps to Move a Pivot Table
-
Select the Pivot Table
Click anywhere inside the pivot table. The PivotTable Tools contextual tab appears on the ribbon. -
Open the Move Option
On Windows, go to PivotTable Analyze → Actions group → Move PivotTable.
On Mac, go to Analyze → PivotTable → Move PivotTable. -
Choose the New Location
A dialog box appears with two options:-
Existing Worksheet: Specify the cell where the pivot table should start.
-
New Worksheet: Excel will create a new sheet and place the pivot table there.
-
-
Confirm the Move
Click OK to move the pivot table. Excel preserves all data connections, formatting, and calculations.
Notes and Considerations
-
Moving a pivot table does not affect the underlying data.
-
References to the pivot table in formulas may need to be updated if the pivot table is moved to a new worksheet.
-
Large pivot tables may take a few seconds to relocate, depending on the system performance.
Example
Suppose you have a pivot table summarizing quarterly sales in Sheet1 starting at cell B5. To move it to Sheet2 starting at cell A1:
-
Click the pivot table in
Sheet1. -
Go to PivotTable Analyze → Move PivotTable.
-
Select Existing Worksheet, enter
Sheet2!A1, and click OK.
The pivot table now appears in Sheet2 at the specified location, retaining all filters and formatting.
